Pastor Chris Oyakhilome’s age – Revealed!!!

Just how old is Pastor Chris Oyakhilome? As the author of the Nos 1 Blog on Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, I have been asked this question countless times….thus, the reason for this post.

Pastor Chris says he has been in ministry for over twenty[20] years, and we know that he was actively involved with ministry from his youth – he organized crusades where the sick were healed and hundreds were saved as a teenager. So fill in your answer, just how old do you think Pastor Chris Oyakhilome is?

Well, now that you have set your mind to the task, I have a question for you – why is it so important to you how old a man of God is? What causes the blessings of God he carries to flow into your life, his age or the anointing he carries? It doesn’t really matter whether he is young or old, black or white, tall or short….all these physical attributes are not necessary for God to use a man. After all, he spoke through a donkey to correct the “madness” of a Prophet. When asked about his age in an exclusive interview with National Standard – a leading news magazine in Nigeria, he had this to say:

Q – How old is Pastor Chris? There is a mystery surrounding your age; no birthday greetings in the papers carry your age. Ans – Well, I would say I am a bit fascinated by the media creation of a mystery because none of us created it. I went to schools and so must have registered with my age declarations, I have a passport and my date of birth must be there. I have filled so many forms throughout this country. So for anybody to suggest that there is a mystery about my age seems mischievous. So I think I would rather leave it that way. Q – Will you like to solve the mystery for us? Ans – No, it seems mischievous and ridiculous, but maybe I have enjoyed the mystery created by the media over the issue and would just let it be.

But remember, the more important thing is the anointing of the Spirit of God and you will agree that whether or not we know how old he is exactly, we know that he is anointed of God.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome… definitely a Crowd Magnet!!

It is without a doubt that some of the greatest gatherings have been attended by Christian adherents; my fascination with the ‘whys’ and ‘wheres’ of such momentous events lured me to surfing the internet and mind boggled was I at the figures that stared back at me. Millions of people have gathered at several places in different parts of the world to attend crusades, many of these meetings ….religious. Some of the ‘crowd pullers’, I’m sure you are already familiar with: A Billy Graham 5-day Crusade in London and Paris had over 2 million people in attendance, 7 million people attended a week-long Benny Hinn Crusade in India in 2005. David Oyedepo held a crusade with in 1985 with 1 million people at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, Nigeria and Enoch Adeboye hit 5 million also in Lagos in the late 90’s. The list is endless and impressive.

I was in one of such meetings – the Good Friday Miracle Night with Pastor Chris Oyakhilome; it took place at Km 40 Lagos – Ibadan Express Way on the 14th of April, 2006. It was tagged a night of signs, miracles and blessings; an epoch making all-night event which attracted a gargantuan crowd. I personally feel the estimate of 3.5million people was  modest because according to the event organizers, 2.6 million people pre-registered in the run-up to the event. The publicity campaign for the meeting was exceptional, unique and unprecedented; in the characteristic Christ Embassy style, no stone was left unturned. The most spectacular part of the campaign for me was the day a helicopter branded with the crusade colors showered hand bills on the dense population below in the busy streets of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital. The result …… Lagos stood still!!

On d-day, all routes led to the LoveWorld Crusade Ground and Lagos-Ibadan Express Way was jammed with human and pedestrian traffic despite the excellent efforts of  government security operatives. Pastor Chris and his convoy had a very tough time getting into the grounds – though I have read a few articles whose misguided authors claim he was flown into the grounds by helicopter; take it from an eye-witness, it was not so. Every inch of the sandy ground of the LoveWorld Crusade Ground was covered by a hungry audience, they were not “miracle-seekers” as some have said, but people of all ages and from all works of life who came to experience the tangible presence of God that is evident with the man of God Pastor Chris Oyakhilome – the miracles are simply a manifestation of this presence. The morning after the meeting, the roads and streets leading in and out the venue were grid-locked; road users sat in vehicles for  12 hours and more -and  the brave endured the Spartan trek down the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. It was reported two brides missed out on their weddings, their cavalcade was sandwiched somewhere in the static traffic. The unprecedented event no doubt would remain indelible in the minds of not only travelers but most importantly the crowd which had thronged in their millions to receive from God.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome preached the word of God with power, he message, addressed primarily to the nation of Nigeria yet not limited in its  reach, was titled “Stop the Wickedness”, as Pastor Chris ministered, the Holy Spirit swept through the congregation causing the glory of God to rest upon everyone in power. There were tremendous miracles with several thousands giving their hearts to Christ. It was a night of exclusive assemblage, in total recall mode I get goosebumps on my skin just thinking of all the momentous things which occurred that night.  3.5 million People gathered in a single night, not for sports or entertainment but for Jesus! ‘It takes God to be with a man to be able to attract such a crowd for Jesus’ remarked an invitee, undeniably speaking out the thoughts of millions about a man of God who has consistently been a “Crowd-Puller”.

Susan Boyle – the woman who dared to dream

I stumbled on the story of Susan Boyle and I followed it to the end of the third series of the show – Britain’s Got Talent!!! Wow!!! Personally, I think she should have won the show; apart from the fact that she has a great voice, her act and her story is better suited for a performance before her Royal Majesty, the Queen. Isn’t it amazing? In just a few weeks her life has been changed forever all because she dared to dream.

But this is not a Susan Boyle fan blog, all you need is google her name and you’ll find all the juicy tit-bits about her…..what caught my attention is the fact that as a result of her sudden rise to fame, she got so much media attention, both positive and negative. Yes, negative!!! I was comforted because it then means Pastor Chris Oyakhilome is not the only one getting negative press for doing good.

I mean, what did she do wrong except shake up the staus-quo and give hope to the millions who were thrilled by her performances? She proved that indeed anyone, regardless of your educational background, social connections and even your looks, can make a difference. What did Pastor Chris Oyakhilome do wrong except to live a life consumed with a passion to give lives a meaning? All this man of God wants to do is reach more people with the gospel of Jesus Chris, impact the world with the transforming power of this gospel, affect more lives with his message and turn them on for Jesus. What did he ever do to deserve such criticism?

I took a trip to Nairaland recently and I was shocked at some of the responses posted in that forum [I reserve my detailed comments on this to a later time]. Well, it’s been more than 2000 years and individuals and organizations alike are spending multiplied millions to cast aspersions on the person of Jesus Christ and to discredit His miracles. In Luke2:34, the Prophet said concerning Jesus Christ ever before he performed a single miracle….this child is for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against.

I find solace in this, Pastor Chris is identified with this Jesus and he therefore is a sign that shall be spoken against. Pastor Chris will always say “Supernatural power brings supernatural persecution”, he is wearing a “Coat of many Colors” and like Joseph, his biggest critics are his brothers…..I look forward to reading your comments on this post.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome – My HERO!!

Have you ever met someone with all the answers to life’s most puzzling questions? Or one whose intelligence surpasses and astounds even the most sophisticated of the intelligentsia? Have you ever met someone who is love and truly in love with everyone? Have you ever met someone whose life is based on the truth and nothing but the truth?

Sounds like a smart ad for ‘the idyllic man’, better put up all your hopes on the latest high tech robotic gizmo. So think again before you ask the silly question, is this for real? Well the bad news is the ad is real and the good news is that this ‘someone’ is human-got flesh and blood. Sure sounds like the resume of God, but before I let the cat out of the bag, you need to ponder on this.

Before now, I was melancholic; I had neither role models, nor mentors and the likes, everyone just fit into the applecart-unimpressive. It wasn’t necessarily about being admirable; the human factor I guess subdues the glitz, glamour and all of the esteem that extols the individual and then again leaning on a school of thought which suggests that we all are humans and unique so in summary, no human being is indispensable. How right but wrong I was! Today I’m different, I have a hero and he isn’t an individual I had loved from the onset; I had looked at him from afar; wondering what he had to offer me like a customer contemplating the wares of a peddler. But thank goodness for terrestrial TV stations; in little or no time his face became a constant feature on prime TV schedules; a compelling force I must admit lured me to listen to what he had to say and lo I found a basket full of knowledge. Each time I heard him speak, the torrential flow of knowledge emanating from him seemed unintelligible to me. But as time progressed; all of the right reasons drew my world closer to his. Soon I understood that the word of God was the manual for living rather than the manual of religion like I was earlier taught.

My Role Model, Hero, Tutor, Counsellor, he is really God’s gift to my world. Anyone who could have moulded me in such a way that I’m so much of a lady is really worth listening to. A lot of people have different definitions of him but I call him my hero and he has proven himself over and over again.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome…a Phoney??

A lot had been said and written about him in the past and present; ‘he is a fake preacher’, ‘he is controversial’, ‘he is not a real man of God’… his main critics chorused this and much more. His incredibly ever expanding ministry however remains a parody of these cynical remarks. Reverend Chris Oyakhilome remains an enigma in Africa’s most fervid charismatic nation, Nigeria. Reports of healing and miracles at the Christ Embassy Healing School in Nigeria and South Africa and from his outreach crusades have been objects to be pored over and debated in forums like Nairaland. Allegations of manipulation and deceit have been the conclusion of most critics; accusing Pastor Chris of merely acting out a script. Why? To buoy up the number his followership, and increase sponsorship of programmes

So is he really what his critics say he is?

Now that’s what the Christ Embassy Church website tells you…but there’s more. In 2004, in the city of Port Harcourt over 2.5 million people gathered in a single event to listen to him. Pull over, Johannesburg, South Africa where train stations were shut down and frantic announcements made asking people to turn back. That program was tagged ‘Night of Bliss’ and the gargantuan crowd mirrored his subsequent programs in London and Toronto respectively. But it isn’t just the crowd phenomenon that is synonymous with these crusades; ask the people who turn up, at times spending nights in sleeping bags in front shut venue doors, standing in careening lines tarrying for a seat; then you’d get a clearer picture:

 What more can be said? He is definitely not a phony……I think he is more than a man, more than your eyes can see. Maybe not exactly an enigma to those who are acquainted with the ministry but definitely kaleidoscopic when you realize, critics et al, that this one man has traversed so many areas of ministry that often it’s almost impossible to keep up with the latest development.

Charting a new trend in Christianity

Months and weeks of waiting have finally come down to a few hours, to coin a Latin phrase; time does indeed pass quickly. All around several Christ Embassy churches, announcements, publicity campaigns had inundated members on the upcoming event-Pastor Chris Online, weeks ahead of D-day.

However different from previous campaigns, there were neither large brightly lit banners nor posters for invited guests; everyone attending this landmark program will be attending electronically- an online guest. There is huge expectation and excitement amongst members who are unanimous that the online event will mirror the ministry’s previous successes. Social networking sites are already being bombarded with notices, invites, ads; groups and blogs are being formed, all for this historic event. Suddenly with millions of eyes on desktops, laptops and palmtops visual display screens and eager fingers caressing mouses and touchpads, a click away could guarantee a change of destiny for millions of lives.
